Last year, Summerfest visitors strolled through a glowing “Cosmic Cornfield” created by the Milwaukee-based immersive art group FuzzPop Workshop. This year, FuzzPop is back with a new experience called “Astral Relics of the Great North Woods.”
This towering installation is 30 feet tall, 70 feet in diameter, created by 11 Milwaukee-based artists, and can play 1,048,576 musical creations to be activated by visitors.
And, I’m happy to report, it resembles a physical manifestation of what would H.P. Lovecraft would have written if ever visited the North Woods.
“‘Astral Relics Of The Great North Woods’ from FuzzPop is neat and cosmic horror-y. Should be a hoot at night!” Matt Wild of Milwaukee Record posted.
And just like that, I went from “visiting Summerfest at some point to shoot some VOYD content” to “must go now for cosmic horror.”
If you go to Summerfest this weekend, check out this installation and come back here to let me now how it was!
Speaking of the North Woods…IT’S BLOOD HOOK TIME
40 years ago, the Troma film crew rolled into Hayward, Wisconsin to shoot what may be the only fishing-based slasher horror film ever created: Blood Hook.
And it helped put the glorious giant muskie on the map.
Hayward is celebrating this weekend with a screening of the film, a costume contest, and a special presentation by the both the director and the producer of the film.
Speaking of VOYD at Summerfest…
Our flagship show over at VOYD Studios is a live music podcast called Sonic Seedpod, which consists of primarily artist performances, interviews, and a rapid fire question segment called the Seedpod 6 Questions of Doom. So naturally we hit Summerfest last year to challenge innocent bystanders to the Questions of Doom, including a Viking, Party Marty, some drunk guy, and The Moon.
Speaking of Cosmic…
July is Alien Month, as I explained over in the Fright Club this week, and I’ve been busy finishing up the first issue of the Wisconsin Frights zine to get off to the printer and into the hands of Fright Club members as soon as possible.
This issue will feature new research and writing detailing Wisconsin’s strangest UFO encounters, experiences submitted by readers, activities, and even a recipe to make Joe’s alien pancakes that may or may not be safe for human consumption!
When this issue is ready to ship, I’ll be sending it out to all current paid Fright Club members. Sign up now so you don’t miss it!
Dang! WI is off the chain this summer
